This No-Salt Taco Seasoning recipe is SIMPLE to make but more importantly, will kick up the flavor in all your Mexican dishes. This recipe puts you in charge of how much salt you add!
Benefits of using a no-salt taco seasoning
Don't get me wrong. I love salt!
I always add salt to my recipes that use salt-free seasonings, which might seem contradictory, but it's not!
I prefer no-salt seasonings because I have control over the amount of salt I add.
That's why I use salt free seasonings for a variety recipes:
Not sure how much salt to add to certain foods? Don't worry, I share these recommended amounts below.
The problem with the pre-made seasoning packets or rubs is that you have no idea how much salt is actually getting on your food when applying them.
Not to mention that the spices are likely stale and lack flavor.
Finally, and maybe most importantly, everyone has the different salt tolerances. Using a no-salt taco seasoning enables you to modify the sodium specific to your diet.
Check out the FDA's Sodium in Your Diet article if you want to learn more about concerns with high sodium intake, what to look for when reading food labels, and 10 tips on how to reduce sodium.
Other than just using this seasoning for taco meat, it's even great on smash burgers. Put a little Mexican flair into your next burger night.
But what is the right amount of salt to add?
If you decide to add the salt separately, you will need to figure out how much to add.
The chart below is the standard 'rule of thumb' for a variety of foods. Feel free to reduce or increase as you wish, or as needed for any dietary restrictions.
Type of Food | Kosher Salt Qty |
---|---|
Meats | 1 teaspoon / pound* |
Rice (dry) | 1 teaspoon / cup |
Pasta Water | 2 tablespoon / 4 quarts |
Vegetables | 1 teaspoon / pound |
Stock/Broths/ Gravies | 1.5 teaspoon / 4 quarts |
If you are using table salt or fine sea salt, reduce the quantities by 25%.
How much no-salt taco seasoning should I add to various foods?
Use 2 tablespoons of this no-salt taco seasoning per pound of meat.
Again, if you are adding lots of vegetables, rice and/or liquids, you will need to add more seasoning.
And, as always, taste the food periodically and determine if a bit more is needed.
